Ironhorse Vineyards Viognier 2006
Iron Horse produces a small amount of Viognier. The grapes are grown on the T-bar-T Vineyard in the Northeast foothills of the Alexander Valley. Much of the fruit is combined with Sauvignon Blanc from the same estate to make a maverick blend called Cuvee R. A few exceptional lots are held out for special bottling. The 2006 is especially bright, fresh, floral and exquisitely aromatic. It is like pure perfume.

The Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, meaning "little drops of gold", is one of the most famed vineyards in the Mosel. Valle Reale Montepulciano d'Abruzzo  2005
Owned by the Abruzzo's Pizzolo family, Valle Reale's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo sees two years of oak aging and four months in bottle. The result is an inviting wine with smoke and black cherry. Very ripe, almost raisiny, with red licorice and berry character, full body and bright finish. Slightly tart. A bit rustic, but I like the exotic fruit character.

Castillo La Bastida Rioja Reserve Spain 1999
 Made from 100% Tempranillo from vines over 30 years of age. Though the legal definition of “Reserva” in the region of Rioja requires 3 years of aging, with a minimum of just 1 year in barrel, this wine spends 18 months in American barriques, and achieves a complete integration of the flavors of grape and wood, plus the mellowness that only time can provide.

Craneford Allyson Parsons Barosa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Maybe not varietal in the classic leafy, herbal sense, this is full on, round and quite supple with some darker, ripe currant fruit etched nicely with a subtle cut of herb that says its Cabernet, but from a warmer region. All in all this is impressive for its scale and balance - slippery, supple and loaded with gorgeous fruit at its core, saying drink me now with abandon and joy.

Maculan Brentino Veneto 2003
A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% of the wine was aged in barrique (1/3 of which is new) for 12 months and 50% was aged in stainless steel tanks. Although the grape varietals are French, Fausto Maculan assures us that the wine is quintessentially Italian. Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, Brentino has a complex bouquet of ripe berry fruit, hay, licorice and wood. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and dry with perfectly balanced acidity. Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

“Wine from Sardinia? You bet. Argiolas is showing the world what this Italian island can deliver. The Perdera bottling is made mostly from a local grape called monica.
